Study to develop a roadmap on Climate Change & Health in India

 

Assisting Sida to identify priority areas and providing guidance on how to use resources for cost-effective interventions that address key climate-sensitive health risks, and to define potential partners for future collaborations between both public and private Swedish and Indian organisations/institutions. The assignment addressed the following specific issues:

  • Overview of health consequences and key issues related to impact of climate change in India.
  • Status of climate change and health related policies, programme implementation and adaptive measures to reduce impact on health outcomes due to climate change in India.
  • Vulnerabilities of population groups with specific focus on women and children. Vulnerabilities of specific geographical regions/states in relation to effects of climate-related risks and challenges on health.
  • Preparedness of the health system to deal with the possible impact of climate change on health status of the vulnerable population and the political will to address these issues.
  • Inter-sectoral convergence between health and other ministries such as environment, agriculture, women & child development, science & technology, transport, meteorology etc.
  • Response gap from different aspects - policy, programme implementation and adaptive measures and the challenges and opportunities for Sida.
  • Institutions (public, private and international) responsible and working for measuring / mitigating / adapting to the impacts of climate change on health in India.
  • Status of Management Information System (MIS) to inform policy and programme.

The study provided recommendations to Sida on the potential for addressing the response gap, priority areas to address key climate -sensitive health risks through partnerships between Swedish and Indian development partners.
