Assessment of Swedish support to the health sector in DRC

Assessment of the feasibility of Swedish support in the field of health with a focus on SRHR including gender based violence (GBV) in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Making recommendations for areas of support and possible modalities of Swedish support to the health sector.

The objectives of the assignment were to:

  • Assess the feasibility of Swedish targeted support to a) local and regional levels focusing on prevention, care/support linked to SGBV as well as the fight against SGBV; b) strengthening of primary health care support focusing on the development of selected health zones alongside targeted support in favour of SRHR including HIV and AIDS;
  • Recommend areas of Swedish support in line with the strategic directions including a transition from humanitarian aid to long term development cooperation;
  • Explore and recommend channels of Swedish support;
  • Recommend suitable programme in which Swedish support could be included;
  • Recommend specific issues and channels for dialogue, more specifically on the issue of combating and preventing SGBV, the realisation of UN resolutions 1325 and 1820 respectively and on the promotion of SRHR.

 

The Consultant carried out the following activities to meet the objectives:

  • Conducted desk study of current development support to the DRC in the areas of health, SRHR and HIV and AIDS.
  • Contacted and interviewed relevant stakeholders in the DRC (Kinshasa and Goma).
  • Analyzed documentation and wrote report with recommendations for way forward for Swedish development cooperation in the health sector in the DRC.
